Becoming so heavenly minded that we are of some earthly good.

Is it OK for Christians to be Patriotic?

Grunge Flag

It’s Independence Day here in America. The day we celebrate our country’s freedom from a tyrannical government. I don’t know about you but I’m thankful that I’m a citizen of this great country. I’m not ashamed nor do I apologize for it. And I don’t think I’m better than anyone because of it (I wasn’t born here as a result of anything I did).

Opposing Viewpoints

Whenever we talk about Christianity and America we are bound to have some opposing viewpoints.

For example, some believe that the Founding Fathers made a covenant with God and God still remembers His covenant even when we don’t. That’s why it’s so difficult for ungodly people to take over this country.

And then there’s the side that believes God had nothing to do with the Revolution and it was simply a man made rebellion. They are quick to bring up the fact that the Bible tells us to submit to our rulers, not fight  a war against them.

We could go on and on with opposing viewpoints…is America a Christian nation or not?… Should Christians get involved in politics or not?…Is it God, man or a combination of both who appoint our leaders (which include our President)?

But I just want to ask one simple question. Do you think it’s OK for Christians to be patriotic? You know, someone who loves Jesus and who loves this country?

Did You Know God Loves the WHOLE World?…I do now, thanks.

I get the feeling from some believers that it’s wrong to love this place I call home. And they usually remind me that God loves the whole world not just the U.S. (thanks for clearing that one up for me guys).

Anyways, I think you can tell where I stand on the issue. I think it’s OK to be a disciple of Christ and love this country. Of course our allegiance is first and foremost to King Jesus and His kingdom before any worldly government. But I do not see any conflict with being a patriotic American and a faithful Christian.

So that’s what I think…anyone else care to chime in here? I’ll do my best to be nice even if you disagree with me. Winking smile

P.S.

And I know, we should really define what the words patriotic and Christian mean but I have a BBQ to go to. So if you want to do me a favor and define those words in the comments we can have a nice little discussion.

Amen brother, well said. Happy Independence Day!

As a European, I find it a little weird. I’m not saying its wrong, but its definitely not in our (European/Dutch) culture. Singing the national anthem in church yesterday was a bit much for me.

Thanks for sharing Paul. I can imagine it would be weird if you grew up in a culture that did not celebrate patriotism. Feel free to share any more comments or questions you may have about this.

Once again I find myself reading your blog and could not agree more with what you have written. And it’s not just because your my son, but because I have always been one to give credit were credit is due no matter who it is! and it just so happens that your due a great deal of credit for bring up such a simple issue which has such a very confound impact on our society and the future and direction of our great nation, however some how through the turns of the road, and the ups and downs of the hills and through the valleys over a couple hundred years or so a vast amount of USA citizens some how or another have not contemplated the most very basic conception of the fact we were and still are a christian nation and sad to say that so many elders of our great country (The USA)have long forgotten or not even considered for a very long time and even worse not at all by so many young people today!

With that being said, I feel I should also recognize all those whom have taken the time to read, pray and think about the whole picture, I know there are many, many, many Christian folks out there of all ages, races, and of very diverse backgrounds, for this I praise God and thank Jesus too for all He has done.

I also want to make clear that I have not forgotten and very, very, very much recognized all the service women and men and there families whom have paid the highest price one can pay for this very issue of “are we a Christian Nation” There sincerity and resolve speak volumes to were we stand as a great nation!!!

The fact is, YES. the United States of America was established and still is a Christian Nation. I also what like to mention that the term of “Christian” should be defined for what it is (A bible believing and God fearing people whom have a personal relationship with the King, Jesus Christ)with that said, you don’t have to explain what we do not stand for, the Word of God explains that very, very, very well. And LOVE will always WIN.

Hey Dad, thanks for sharing your thoughts on the matter. I agree that we should honor those who have laid down their lives so we could enjoy the freedom we have today.

Jesus said my kingdom is no part of this world ! Kingdom for those who don’t know means government !!! The bible is very specific when it comes down to governments and who really rule them . 1 john 5:19. You christians need to, not only read your bibles put study it. The bible in rev. Talks about the kings of the Earth coming against Jesus !!! Rev19:19-21
Again for any of you who don’t know kings the Earth represent governments ! Not just one or two governments but all governments ! That includes the USA !! Sorry patriots, I know its hurts but true ! But if you want to serve Jesus ! John 17:3. , but if you want to be a Patriot, then you really need to consider Daniel 2:44 because if you do .the same will be your fate !

Hello Blove, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts here. Obviously we have different opinions regarding this matter because I believe it’s OK to love your country and love the Lord. I also love my wife and my friends too and I don’t feel that takes away from loving the Lord. I also believe God cares about not only my country but all the nations in the world. We are commanded to pray for those in authority and so I do. I don’t believe the government will deliver or save people from sin and death but I believe the idea for government originated in God, not man. It has been abused but it does not mean the idea is altogether corrupt. Thank you again for sharing. I’m not opposed to hearing other perspectives.
