The Benefits of Meditating on the Brevity of Life

It’s so easy to get caught up in the busyness of life. I recently started my own copywriting business and have been spending a lot of time getting the business off the ground. I’m not complaining, actually I’m really enjoying it because I’m finally getting to do work that I love. But I’ve been so busy that the days just fly by. I didn’t even know it was Friday until I was driving into town this morning.

So when I find myself being super busy I like to take time to slow down. Something that helps me keep things in perspective is meditating on the brevity of life. I know many people think this sounds depressing and think, “Why would I want to think about the fact that I’m going to die one day? That’s so negative.”

What if Joshua Accepted His Circumstances or Was a DIY Type?

I was reading Joshua this morning and something really stood out to me. It was the truth that it’s God who prospers us and the truth that we play a significant role in this. I saw a beautiful example of God and man co-laboring together to accomplish His purposes in the earth.

God speaks to Joshua in chapter 1 verse 3,

Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses.

Did you see God’s part and man’s part right? God who said He would give the land to Joshua but Joshua still had to tread upon the enemy.

Jonathan Edwards on Affection

Religious_Affections_by_Jonathan_Edwards1

A person who has knowledge of doctrine and theology only – without religious affection – has never engaged in true religion. Nothing is more apparent than this: our religion takes root within us only as deep as our affections attract it. There are thousands who hear the Word of God, who hear great and exceedingly important truths about themselves and their lives, and yet all they hear has no effect upon them, makes no change in the way they live. Help Us Be Better Stewards or Give Us More?

audience of one

Many times I’ve prayed and asked God for more. More love, more power, more of His presence, more, more, more…But tonight I was reminded of a simple truth as I was reading a book by Neil Anderson.

Anderson talked about being good stewards of what God has already revealed to us. He was talking about counseling someone and walking them through the Steps to Freedom but what he said sparked a whole stream of ideas in me.

It got me thinking about every area of my life and I began asking myself, am I stewarding that well? It could be ministry, relationships, money, clients, my marriage, revelations, health and even the gospel. It’s easy to give attention to the big things in our lives but I believe God wants us to pay especially close attention to the small things. Continue reading

Is it OK for Christians to be Patriotic?

Grunge Flag

It’s Independence Day here in America. The day we celebrate our country’s freedom from a tyrannical government. I don’t know about you but I’m thankful that I’m a citizen of this great country. I’m not ashamed nor do I apologize for it. And I don’t think I’m better than anyone because of it (I wasn’t born here as a result of anything I did).

Opposing Viewpoints

Whenever we talk about Christianity and America we are bound to have some opposing viewpoints.

An Unconventional Way to Fight Evil

drug free zone

Is fighting evil really the best way to defeat it? In my town of Battle Ground, WA we have a heroin problem. Heroin addiction is evil. It’s a tool the enemy uses to steal, kill and destroy lives. I just heard yet another story about a local kid who overdosed on heroin and died. I hate hearing stories like that. I get angry and I want to fight this evil. Continue reading

Empathy: Weep with those who weep

sad thumb faces

It was a tough day. I woke up at 5:30 in the morning (after going to sleep at 1 A.M.) and packed my bags before I left for the office. I was running late so didn’t have time to stop for my usual cup of coffee (which would have probably helped with my nodding off in traffic). After spending an hour in traffic I arrived at the office to find six voicemails, twenty unread emails, and a stack of unopened mail. Continue reading

Pondering Perfectionism

Josh, when you play so competitively in basketball the addictive behavior I see in you is perfection.

I heard this during a Feedback Meeting when I was in drug rehab. We would take turns going around the room and pointing out addictive behaviors in our peers. I believe perfection was my most popular addictive behavior (I think second was masking with humor). Continue reading

How to Guard Your Heart

castle walls
“Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.”
-Proverbs 4:23 NKJV

The New Living Translation reads, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” The Bible instructs us to guard our hearts above all else. I would say this is one of those really important life lessons.

Last night I dug out one of my journals from 2005 and found a note in the front pocket sleeve that read:

“guard your heart – from it come the issues of life. (Life issues forth from the heart – from “the abundance of the heart…”). Let God be the One who guides it. He is jealous for you and your heart. Don’t give it away to others.”
